Function Of SPD

Jun 11, 2025Leave a message

Surge protection device (SPD) is mainly used to protect the electronic devices and circuits from damages caused by instantaneous overvoltage (such as lightning strikes, electromagnetic interference, etc.). Its core functions include conducting the diverting destructive current, limiting voltage to a safe range, protecting equipment and data security, reducing the risk of fire, and etc.

What are the core functions of a surge protector?

1.Conducting the diverting destructive current

  • When the instantaneous overvoltage are generated due to lightning or circuit abnormalities, the SPD can conduct within nanosecond timeframes, release the high-energy current through the grounding system, thereby prevent the equipment from being subjected to overload current.

2.Limiting voltage to a safe range

  • Device protection

Prevent the hardware damage to the computers, televisions, elevator control systems, medical equipments, etc. caused by sudden voltage surges, and extend the lifespan of the devices.

3.Data and security protection

  • Prevent the sensitive data in data centers and industrial control systems from being lost due to the equipment failures, while also reduce the risks of electric shocks and electrical fires.
  • Reduce the interference caused by grid fluctuations to equipment in scenarios such as communication lines and smart homes, and ensure the continuous and reliable operation of the system.

4.Technical implementation method

  • The SPD achieves rapid response through its internal core components (such as metal oxide varistors and gas discharge tubes). Some models also have a status monitoring function, which can alert of failure conditions.
