Applications Of Surge Protective Devices in Renewable Energy Projects

Renewable energy projects including solar photovoltaic power stations, wind farms, hydropower stations, and energy storage power plants are mostly located in open outdoor areas with harsh natural conditions and high surge risks. SPDs are widely applied in all core links of renewable energy power generation, transmission, and grid connection, becoming standard protective equipment for new energy projects.

In photovoltaic power projects, SPDs cover DC and AC power systems and signal monitoring systems. DC SPDs are installed in PV combiner boxes and inverter DC terminals to protect solar panel arrays and DC transmission lines from lightning and induced surges. AC SPDs are deployed at inverter grid-connected terminals and power distribution cabinets to suppress grid-connected overvoltages. Signal SPDs protect PV monitoring and data transmission systems, ensuring stable operation of intelligent monitoring equipment.

In wind power projects, wind turbines and outdoor fan control systems face severe lightning threats due to their high-altitude installation. Type 1 and Type 2 combined SPDs are installed in wind turbine tower power distribution cabins and fan control cabinets to discharge high-energy lightning surges and protect fan generators, frequency conversion equipment, and PLC control systems from overvoltage damage. Meanwhile, signal SPDs protect wind speed sensors, yaw control systems, and remote signal transmission lines.

In hydropower projects, hydropower stations are usually built in mountainous and humid areas with frequent thunderstorms. SPDs are applied in hydropower unit power distribution systems, generator control cabinets, and dam monitoring systems. They suppress lightning surges and power switching surges, protecting power generation equipment and hydraulic monitoring instruments and ensuring stable power generation of hydropower units.

In electrochemical energy storage projects, energy storage batteries, BMS battery management systems, and PCS power conversion systems are highly sensitive to voltage fluctuations. Special anti-surge SPDs are installed at the power inlet and output terminals of energy storage cabinets to avoid surge-induced battery overcharge, discharge failure, and management system disorder, ensuring the operational safety of energy storage systems.

The application of SPDs in renewable energy projects solves the pain points of high lightning exposure and fragile power electronic equipment in new energy systems, reduces equipment failure rates and project operation risks, improves the stability of new energy power generation and grid connection, and promotes the safe and efficient development of renewable energy industries.
